-Text messages are short messages (~160 characters) generally sent from one cellular telephone to another cellular telephone.
-Typically a certain number of messages are included in a subscriber's monthly plan. Otherwise, they may cost an additional ~5-10 cents per message.
-Because cell phones do not have full alphanumeric keyboards, text messaging is achieved by pressing combinations of number digits to achieve the desired combination of letters.
-Over time, phone manufacturers have figured out ways to program cell phones to predict what words users are trying to type before they have been completely spelled out. The industry standard for this predictive software is called "T9" ("Text on Nine Keys"). With some practice, it can drastically reduce the amount of time it takes a user to send a lengthy text message (visit: www.T9.com)
-It is worth noting that Blackberry and Personal Digital Assistant users (i.e., Palm Pilot, Treo, etc.) use email more commonly than cell phones users because:
-a) Their devices are able to process and display more complex information
-b) They offer full alphanumeric keyboards and
-c) Emails are viewed a being more professionally acceptable
